I just want to say that all of this is bullshit. Compared to previous years in Entertainment PR, this Awards Season is bleak for me. My firm is only handling 2 Oscar nominees at the moment, and none of the big ones. At the same time, I could make a feature film with what we’re being paid, so this stuff about “hurting the artists”, pretty much a load of crap. In general, it’s the studios and record labels that are hurting the artists.
Remember back in the 90’s that band TLC? The month they had the number one single, album and video… they had to declare bankruptcy. The label made millions. Not much has changed since those days. The big scare that home video recording and cassette tapes were going to destroy the Entertainment Industry was all hype, too.
Having relocated from the US, the limitations of Internet access to information has really opened my eyes to just how stuck in the past the labels and studios are. Those “this video is not available in your country” notices? They make me say, “Screw it, I’ll just download it”. Because paying $12 shipping on a $15 dollar CD is stupid.
Here’s an admission: The film we’re handling nominees for sent me a screener several months ago. I STILL haven’t watched it. For free. Right now, I’m about to download that shit out of spite.
Filesharing has proved to be a great tool for independent artists, when used correctly. We need to make sure this is still readily available.
Also, Chris Dodd can eat a bag of dicks.
